We've been making a ton of felt flowers around here lately.
And I was feeling like I wanted to use some of these great felt colors in Jonas's room.
His room is the most colorful in the house (so is he, btw),
so these felts flags were a perfect accent for above his bed.

The kids are getting a little too used to using my computer.

And, with things getting a little hectic around here, I thought we could all use our own work space.

So, I started this project a few days ago. No photos to share with you yet, but we're getting there.
Here's some of the things we're using to pull this whole thing together.

One more thing...

We're attempting to put this "office" together with ONLY found items around our house (or a friend's house).

In the beginning of this year I had the privilege of being one of 4 designers chosen to participate in

the Philadelphia Home Show.

Each designer was paired with a local celebrity. We designed a room specifically with that celebrity in mind. My local star was Gregg Murphy, of Comcast's SportsNet. I designed a flea market chic guest room/home office for Gregg. We had an imaginary theme that his relatives from Ireland were in to visit and staying in Gregg's "Guest Room".

Gregg is a local sports guy loved by Philly fans across the city. He was so fun to work with and spent a lot of time in this finished room meeting and greeting fans. He really made the room come alive and added a special vibe to the room. We even had an impromptu "happy hour" in the room with some friends one night at the show.

My finished room looked like this...

A far cry from when we arrived in our space and it looked like this...

I'm not kidding when I tell you that I wanted to throw in the towel right then and there when I saw what we had to work with.

But with the help of many generous and talented family and friends, we pulled it off.

I wanted to share some of the small details with you.

Like this mini bar, which was a huge hit. What guest wouldn't love this?

The dresser doubled as a night stand. I tried to go with the travel feel, and added vintage suitcases throughout the room.

I created imaginary windows in the room by hanging woven wood blinds under

camel colored cotton embroidered drapery panels.

I attached these panels to the wall with plumbing pipes.

You can also see in the photo below the "crown molding"

we used to finish off the top of the walls. It is porch flooring from the porch of an old Philadelphia home from the early 1900's.

On the left side of the room I created a home office. It turned out great thanks to the custom barn wood workstation created by John Duffy, of Stable Tables.

Coffee sacks were sliced open and stapled around a plain

cork board to create a spot to hang notes and work papers.

Some gorgeous architectural pieces hung in the room, thanks to Philadelphia Salvage.

Home made accessories for the workstation.

Two second hand ottomans got a quick and inexpensive face lift with coffee sacks.

I used shipping pallets to create file holders in the office part of the room.

This gorgeous and comfy chair was loaned to me by Robert Allen Designs. It was another huge hit of the room and had an Irish sweater texture to it.

Bike spokes were used to create a spot for Gregg to hang his photos of trips to Ireland.

We attached the spokes to a strip of bead board, then used clothes pins to hang the photos.

The bottom half of the walls were covered in wood from shipping pallets.

The bedroom side was covered in luxurious fabrics, thanks again to Robert Allen Designs.

And, the awesome rug from Avalon Carpet and Tile.

The headboard was created by attaching 2 vintage doors to the wall behind the bed, adding 2 corbels, and laying a skinny closet door across the top to create a canopy feel.

The bedside lamps were created by slicing a globe in half and adding a pendant light.

One of the biggest surprise hits of my designer room at the Philadelphia Home Show
was the monogrammed cork "M" I made for a desk accessory.
I was totally surprised at how many comments it got.
It was a last minute project I came up with when I realized I needed a few accessories for the desk.

Since it was such a hit, I thought I'd show you how to make your own.
Step one: gather all you girlfriends and drink a few bottles of wine.

Step two: print our a large letter on the printer.

Step: Three: Use the paper letter as a guide and hot glue all your corks together.
(I mapped mine out on top of the print out first before I started gluing to make sure I had enough corks.)

I know you really didn't need a tutorial to figure this out, but I gave you another reason to have another glass of wine tonight.

I rarely post recipes, but, it's a rainy Friday, and these new glasses seem to be screaming for a mixed drink.

Recently I was luck enough to receive a set of 6 Tortoiseshell gorgeous glasses from a company called

So, here's my recipe...it's the perfect drink for a rainy Friday Happy Hour with your girlfriends.
1 shot vodka

1 cup tomato juice/V8
1/4 cup clamato juice
2 splashes of hot sauce
1 splash worcestershire sauce
1 squeeze of lemon
1 pinch salt
1 pinch pepper
1 stalk celery

It's a misleading title, I know.
It sounds like something has actually been accomplished in my powder room.
Something that only a plumber, electrician, or carpenter can do.
Alas, it's just me. Me, my ponytail holder, hot glue gun, drill, mini van...you get the idea.

In a dream world, this house would have been hopin' with all kinds of talented workers while I was away at the Philadelphia Home Show for what seemed like an eternity. But, I don't live on a set of Extreme Home Makeover. So I came home to the house just the way I left it (umm, sort of, as in it was still standing).

There is a beautiful new floor in the powder room and laundry room. But there's still no quarter round on the baseboard.

Did I ever tell you why this glorious event occurred? (I'm talking about the floor)

A pipe under our laundry floor was cracked. So few a few weeks, the floor looked like this.

I'm happy to have the floor back and my prized trash find back home again home again, jiggity jig.

Still working on the sink. I'm thinking of this one from Philadelphia Salvage.

I love the grass green I recently painted the walls.

but mostly happy to have my distressed blue dresser back home!

It's not always easy to find your style.

Especially when you first move in to your home.

It takes time & tweeking. And, even then, you'll probably wind up tweeking some more.

This is what my fireplace in my dining room looks like today.

I'm happy with it. But it took a while to get here.

When we first saw the house, the room looked like this.

I knew right away I wanted to room to be a dining room instead of a living room.

And, I L O V E it as a dining room.

At first, I just thought the fireplace needed a tiny bit of color, so I painted it sea salt by sherwin williams.

Snore.

Something still was just not right. So, I Darkened the back wall and added horizontal stripes.

The stripes worked out great, but I knew the mantel needed to be heftier.

So, we had a mantel made from old barn wood by John Duffy, from Stable Tables.

Then, finally a little before Christmas, I painted the fireplace black.

Donk. That was it.

Now, the fireplace works well with the rest of the room , and the rest of the house for that matter.

So, it takes a while, but keep tweeking. i know I always will.

Still haven't "completed" the girl's room.
But, little by little things are getting done.
Here's the latest additions...
A reading swing, complete with it's own library.

The louvered door was found on the side of the road.

I painted it, added chalkboard paint to the bottom, and use it to hold the girl's books.

p.s. I love the color of the door.

I don't even want to hang the shoe rack back up!

I LOVE these.

They are about 67 cents in the hardware stores.

When my contractor saw them, he insisted they were for electrical boxes only (as if they can go nowhere else).

I love the industrial farmhouse look they give a room.

I also got around to hanging the chevron curtain panels that have been lying around Camille & Lucy's room for about 2 weeks now. Sorry girls.

I love the color and they match the euro pillows on the bed.

Okay, so I'll get around to giving you a full tour of my newest favorite room soon, promise.

I was like a kid in a candy store when I got the chance to pick out all the fabric and bedding I wanted for this room.

They also lent me a great nubby braided fabric chair and ottoman that reminds me of an Irish sweater.

I used this great chocolate plaid for some Euro pillows.

And, this golden geometric for one side of the duvet and some throw pillows.

The brown pattern was used in the duvet also and a small pillow for the chair.

The hounds-tooth is one of my favs.

I've been working on this "mini bar" for a guest room.

It's going to hang on the wall above the bedside dresser.
It would be great filled with water bottles and snapple, plus a few munchies.
Who wouldn't love that in their room?

I used a scrap piece of wood from a shipping pallet and notched out 2 spots for the glasses to hang.
Then, I just wedged the wood into place.

Can't wait to see it hung!

I decided to make a pendant light out of a vintage globe I found at a flea market.

It may have been one of the quickest and easiest project I have ever done.

So, get yourself a globe and start drillin'!

I separated the globe with a straight edge knife right along the seem. It popped right apart.

I used a circular drill bit the same diameter as the light I was going to use.

Drilled a whole through the top.

Popped the light fixture through the whole...(which I purchased at IKEA)

Tada, more later when I hang them.

Whew, today went great with the local tv station.

My back door is the most used door in my home
(well, it's really a side door, but that seems so awkward to say).
But, I've neglected this door for far too long.
So I'm sprucing it up for Christmas with some simple things I have laying around the house.
I purchase nothing to create this back door scene...really, nothing.

I fluffed up an old chair with a throw and this black and white IKEA pillow.

The tree is wrapped in burlap and white ribbon.

I filled the bottom bucket with slices of wood to keep it from toppling over,

along with a few ornaments.

One of my favs...the yardstick star.

I even added a felt flower pin for a pop of red.

I layered a little of this and a little of that, tied it all together and created this swag for my garage doors.

So, I decided I try to make my own with some old coffee bean sacks.

It's a very primitive tutorial.

First, I cut piece of the burlap slightly larger than each side of the ottoman ($7.50 at thrift store).

Then sewed each piece to the piece next to it.

Turned it right side out and ta da.

I love how each side is slightly different.

Just like in fashion, layers almost always works.
Here's a way to create an inexpensive (free) Holiday swag for your home.
layer, layer, layer...

this project included

a scrap piece of burlap from a coffee bag
an old pair of ice skates discarded at a flea market auction
zip ties
branch clippers
cutting from a holly tree and out Christmas tree
ribbon

start by attaching the pine cuttings to the holly cuttings with the zip ties.

then "sew" the burlap to the cuttings with a few zip ties.

then, layer...the burlap, cuttings, ice skates, ribbon.

add a zip tie to the back for hanging.

My Pop-pop gave my siblings and I this pin ball machine in the early 70's.

I love the colors, the vintage look, the idea of having a pin ball machine in your house, everything.

But, I just can seem to get it to work in this room.

Don't you agree?

The Dan cave is coming together, but I just feel like I'm forcing the pin ball machine on this room.

But it's better than this, right?

May be after we paint the basement, I'll transfer it to there.

some multi-colored, some vintage book paper.

Gather...

Create a paper templette with the size triangle you want to use. (It doesn't have to be perfect)

Use Pinking sheers to avoid fraying (and the sewing machine)

Hot glue string, twine, or ribbon to the back (or front) of your triangles

Clip stencil letters on your triangles with clothes pins, paper clips, whatever works.

It's a slippery slope.

Too much is just that...too much.

You teeter on the ledge of little boy and man.

So, I was very happy to see this room for a 13 year old boy coming together so nicely.

It's not my usual vintage style room.

It's A LOT more modern. Which I think fits this boy well.

Here's the inspiration for the room...

There's still much more that needs to be done, Euro pillows, blinds, comfy chair, mirror, floor lamp...

And, I'm sure I'll have to throw some chippy paint and rust in there somewhere!

But for now, it's lookin' good.

I especially love the upholstered wing-back bed frame and sconces.

I have yet to pass up a broken wagon sitting on the edge of the curb in the trash.

I have at least 6 of them. lot's of red ones, a yellow one and a black one.

O, I love that black one.

Some we use in the yard, some just sit in the garage piled with stuff.

This red one was missing some wheels.

So, I sawed (and when I say "I" I mean my nephew Matthew) off the axle and 3 remaining wheels

and was left with this. The perfect little shelf.

The wooden shelves are pieces left over from this project.
It's the perfect vintage pop of color for my kitchen.

I recently gave our foyer a mini makeover with a striped ceiling.

Which I L O V E !

But this inside of the foyer closet, not so much...

Besides it was a total mess before I emptied it out.
I painted the back of the door black to match the rest of the house, and added some leftover hooks, a curtain rod on the inside of the door and hung one lower so the kids could reach their coats and some clips for mittens and what-nots.

With the colder weather and the Holidays coming, I'm happy to have one closet organized and ready for action!

I just had to add this flower embellished pillow to the Dan-Cave.

And I snuck in a few other patterned pillows too.
(since then, there's been a moratorium put on throw pillows in this house,
who ever heard of too many pillows? silly men).

It's a long way from when we first laid eyes on this room...

Wheels have been added to this trash find to create roll up bench seating when we have company.

And this little lady will soon be covered in coffee bean sacks.

The room is really taking on a "lodgey" kinda cozy feel.

I'm helping to decorate for a fundraiser for my kids school this weekend.
I've been lucky enough to have a team of dedicated parents to help me with my vision
of our school's "Taste of the Town", an Autumn themed food, drinks, and game night for adults.

The objective was to keep the costs as L O W as possible. L O W as in free.
So we searched our homes and yards for things that would fit in to the theme.
Half the time I think the other parents thought I was crazy with some of my request.
But, they hung in there and worked their butts off!

I used Pinterest to help me create a vision for what I wanted the night to look like.
This really helped when I was trying to explain to my team what we needed to do to create
an event that was different than the usually school event.

Are ya' gettin' the feelin'?
So, with all this inspiration form the online world, here's
what we have so far...

Burlap sacks for table toppers...

Small stumps for labeling items on the buffet and raffle table.

(which will be used at Thanksgiving for name cards)

Tons of Paper flower bouquets.

Paper & twine garlands.

Electric Candles.

And a pinch of Tiffany Blue added in for a burst of color.
(I didn't want to use typical "Fall" colors", so that's why I threw in the blue)

There's a lot more too.

Hopefully I'll take some photos of the set up and post them early next week.

We recently went to a wedding in Northeastern PA.

It was the cutest reception! It took place at Friedman Farms.

The bride added fabulous rustic touches to every area of the barn.

The groom made the wood tree stump tray the cake was placed on.

And the barn supplied a variety of patterned china for the food to be served on.

There were cute little nooks and crannys everywhere you looked.

Like this little seating area in the cocktail reception area.

I loved this galvanized metal wainscoting.

Even the doors were aged and rustic.

The dance floor was a big hit, with a giant chandelier that hung above it.

Such a pretty event! It was so fun and different, a breath of fresh air!

We loved every minute of it!

Things have been busy around here, and there are many projects in the works.

But, nothing I can show you just yet.

Yesterday I visited Paula. Paula wants to adds some style to her family room without

completely making it over (and breaking the budget).

Here's some things I suggested to perk up her room and add some personality to it.

She's got a great sectional from Dwelling.

And some great art work.

Now, if we could just make those things P O P !

Here's what Paula's sofa faces.

Dunt dunt dunt dah...

I suggested removing the shelves surrounding the TV

completely and painting the wall behind the TV an accent color

(taken from one of the accent pillows).

We's also paint the cabinets below the TV black.

I'd like to remove the door on the right side closet and create a mini bar.

(Paula and her husband may be so-to-be empty nesters, but they

are in NO way old fuddy dutties.)

It's a perfectly fine lamp from Homegoods.
But, I couldn't just leave it alone.

The lamp started like this...

With a little left over paint, hot glue & some fabric flowers,,,

I used some leftover paint and dry brushed the base of

the lamp to add a little zip of turquoise to the room.

(and the Homegoods bag is a perfect drop cloth for the project)

Then, I hot glued a variety of fabric flowers around the shade.

so cute.

{ Design Boards ~ From Start To Finish }

Wondering what my Design Boards are all about?

Recently I designed this board for Lily

(a 10 year old girl)

The design board can give you all the ideas and items you'll need to turn a room in your

home in to the room you've be dreaming of, but never knew where to start.

I send you a image of the room that will be the starting off point to get your creative juices flowing.

I'll also send you a list of suggested items to purchase to complete this room, along with paint colors,

fabric choices, and window treatment ideas.

You can use my list and put the room together yourself, or, if your local (in and around Philadelphia, PA)

I can help you in person.

When we started the room looked like this

and now looks like this

Much better for a pre-tween little girl, right?

We used a lot of the original elements in the design board,

and tweeked it along the way as necessary.

I found this great lamp at

Homegoods, and embellished a little for a custom look.

(more on that later)

Lily has this great stone porch attached to her room.

It was recently enclosed with windows and it is fabulous.

I would love to have a room like this attached to my bedroom.

(it's not finished, so I won't be showing you it just yet,

so use your imagination)

We hung a woven wood roman shade with a blackout liner on her window.
It works really well with her headboard.

Lily's vanity was purchased by her parents years ago when they were on their honeymoon.

A carpenter installed a column of shelves and 2 hanging bars for Lily.
There is so much storage in that little space, that not much furniture was needed in the room itself.

We found a chalkboard decal online and applied it to the back of Lily's door.

Yes, she's a little bit country and a little bit rock & roll.

They are her guitars over on the corner. They work perfectly in this space!

The hanging panel on the terrace door is a ruffly little number from Anthropologie.

The area rug is a little bit granny's attic from Dash & Albert.

It was one of the first purchases for this room and really got the ball rollin'.

It's a lovely, unique room, and I hope Lily loves it for years to come.

I'm starting off the party with my striped ceiling in my foyer...

I'm so happy with the results.

Here's how I did it...

First I painted a base coat.

I let it dry overnight, then I made small pencil marks.
I used a triangle to draw the line from the pencil mark, across the ceiling.
(I suggest doing a small room if this is your first time striping a ceiling)

I used a level (but you could use a board or anything long and straight) to carry the line across the ceiling.

Then, I used Scotchblue Painters Tape to tape on the lines across the ceiling.

I used small pieces of tape to mark where I SHOULDN'T paint.

Painted and ta-da!

Every since I saw the Osbourne's kitchen in the

2005 Mtv reality series I've wanted a sofa in my kitchen.

it's a little blurry, but isn't it the coziest?

You'd never expect that the bat-bitting Ozzy lived here.

You'd expect his place to look more like this ...

personally, I prefer Ozzy's kitchen.

Christins'a a little too rock & roll for me.

Here's my version...

We removed the formal dining room

{neither cozy nor rock & roll}

You might remember this post of our den from

last year, before we remodeled our kitchen.

Now our kitchen is open,
airy & ohh so cozy!

We tried to add simple, useful touches
that express our personality.

like a special spot for coffee in the morning -

to a spot for budding artist to doodle

and keep shopping lists.

open cabinetry,

and burlap bags.

An odd painted pantry adds a little color to the mix

along with a painted ceiling.

Let me remind you what this kitchen looked like when we bought the house...

{Invasion of The Real Housewives of BC}

I'm so happy to have met these 2 chicks in the blog world, and yes, we'll definitely be meeting in real life very soon! They are The Real Housewives of Bucks County.
They've taken over The Painted Home for today and I couldn't be more happy to welcome them here. The Real Housewives of Bucks County have a knack for adding some real flare to your real house. So, enjoy...

Thanks so much, Denise, for having us in your Painted Home (not literally, of course, but here in the blog version!) For newbies to the blogging world like us, we're so happy to have a cyber-friend in Denise who totally rocks at what she does!

We're Jess and Monica, and are the two crazy women who write The Real Housewives of Bucks County. We're basically neighbors with Denise, and are itching to meet her in real life! {hint hint} :)

Anyhow, we wanted to share with all of you Painted Home fans a little bit about our obsession with Fall, and some the fun projects we've done recently as a result of our Autumn love.

Who doesn't love pumpkins? We sure do, so we put together a little post called Notyour Mama's Pumpkins!

We absolutely love using stuff we already own to create something fabulous, and we can't get enough of easy DIY projects, so these pumpkins were right up our alley! Check out the post for all the how-to details.

We both decked out our mantles for Fall, but our styles couldn't be more different! What makes our blog so much fun is that you'll see a variety of different design styles and a little bit of banter back and forth between us about which style is better!

One of our favorite things to do is repurpose stuff we either already have, or find on the cheap. This fall scrap sign was made out of, you guessed it, a scrap piece of poor quality particle board. Now, it has a new lease on life as a cute addition to Monica's front porch!

Finally, one of us may or may not have an aversion to traditional wreaths (ahem, Monica!), so that person came up with a super-cool, easy way to dress up her front porch for Fall. (She likes to call it "The Anti-Wreath". Check out the post and you can find out how to make your own!).

You never know what you might find in ourlittle piece of blogland on any given day, but we hope you'll stop over for a visit and stay awhile! We'd love for you to see what being a REAL housewife of Bucks County really means.

your weathered oak,

how I love you.

But, I don't love your prices.

Love this concrete topped table.

(although I thought it was a weathered metal when

I first saw it - so we're goin' with that thought)

Remember our Man-Cave?

and this?

well, I didn't have the $3,325. to shell out to R.H.

So I improvised.

thanks Martha.

with a little dab of this rubbed over top

of the metallic paint, to gives it a more

weathered look.

and the make-shift pine bar top became this...

it's much better now.
So, what was once a stand-in top 'til we
had more money to purchase something else,
has become a conversation piece and more than just a stand-in
in the Man-Cave.

I added metal brackets to the corners for more of the "Restoration Hardware feel".

I'm running this post again, cause it was such a hit the first time in
October of 2010.
Loved this idea last year, and hoping I have
time to do it again this year in my fireplace.

Our mantel wall is slightly different

than this now.

You can see what the room looks like now - here.

But, I love the simplicity of last year's Fall mantel.

I still plan on using the bats in this year's mantel.
(it never grows old for my kids)

We can never seem to have enough wine glasses.

So, I stopped by IKEA the other day and picked

up some simple glasses.

A few swipes of the brush with some black glass paint,

and we now have this...

They can be used to keep track of which glass is yours,

or, keep track of how many glasses of wine you've had.

I don't know what it is about Fall that makes you want to

cook chilli and have friends over for a big fat food & wine fest?

(well, I would have Jeanne Jones & Co. bring the chilli) -

but I'm happy to fix up the dining room to get ready for everyone!

Here's how you can pull together a casual & cozy Fall table

with just things sitting around your house

(or, umm, your neighbors trash, thrift stores,

flea markets, and your lawn)

I've got a thing for plates. I've had these leaf ones for eva' and they work with everything!

I mix and match all the rest of that plates - they're a mesh of chickens, birds, and flowers.

It's whatever you like. Mixing it makes it more casual.

The glasses don't match either.

...or the chairs.

and they never stay the same color.

They've been stained, blue, yellow, and today, green.

Oh, and one more thing. They were all FREE.

Side of the road.

And don't forget, I have kids.

This is no fancy shmancy dining event people.

I found this on the side of the road too.

It's the perfect size for a 3 year old and goes with the whole

mish mash look.

And this may be the mother load of all trash finds.

It's a 10' long bar/buffet type thingy.

With the perfect paint color and chippy-ness.

Some things just don't need to be re-done.

I collected a few pine cones and tossed them around the buffet.

Filled the copper bucket with wood.

I've packed the room with lots of cozy seating.

It's amazing what a throw and some pillows will do to a space.

Lot's of candles to add to the warm atmosphere.

These window treatments are another mis-treatment

(which is the only way to go) explained here.

Along with the shipping palette plate rack.

The bar is packed (get it? luggage? packed?).

if you work in enough 5 minute long intervals,

you will eventually complete a project...

well, complete is a pretty strong word.

there's still staining of the stairs to do,

and adding some trim edges to the left and right on the risers,

and may be a top trim as well...

but who has the patience for all that when I can just download the

mostly finished photos and have all of you "eww & ahh"

and move my hyper brain onto the next project?
