{ Smoke & Mirrors - A Bathroom Reveal }

okay people...
everyone's dying to know...
"How'd I paint the tile"
and "darn, my tub is pink
or I'd do the same thing"

Well, get out your brushes & rollers -
'cause my tub was pink too
and it still is.

A shower curtain, it's an amazing thing.
It's like a permanent
"Before and After"

I used oil based KILZ over the old pink tiles.

I rolled it on with a sponge roller.
I let the KILZ dry for a few days, then went over it with Semi-Gloss Latex paint.

Here's where the white tile ends and the old pink begins.
I even still have the metal attachment from the shower doors.

Can you even notice the pink tile with this gorgeous floor in your sight?

The only time the curtain is open is when my kids are taking a bath.
Other than that they are always closed.
My kids could care less what color their tub is.
I'm pretty sure the girls would be disappointed if it was anything BUT pink.

The only other time it might be open, is if a house guest is nosy.

Here's the break down
  • 2 quarts Ben Moore Paint - $36.
  • 1 quart Kilz Paint - $8.
  • Knobs for the cabinet - $15.
  • Flooring - $60
  • Shower curtain - $25.
  • Window Fabric - $15.
  • Shutters - $67.
  • Drawer shelf on wall - $7.
  • Curved Shower Curtain Rod - $30.
  • Light Fixture - $33.
  • Glass shades - $15
  • Towel Ring - $9.
  • Bath mat - $10.
  • Toilet Seat - $20.
That's a $352 renovation!

Here's an old drawer I picked up at the Perkiomenville Flea Market today.
The chippy paint is perfect.

My husband and I are closing on a home with a pink bathroom and I love it! I'm going to tone it down, but our pink tub will stay, too. You did a fantastic job! Thanks for the ideas.

  8. I found you through FJI. I love the old drawer and the bright green J - a wonderful composition. I also like the mirror with the chalkboard paint and the grooming reminders. That is awesome. I am going to have to try that with my son.

Just a thought- that lovely chippy drawer is likely lead paint. In a kid's bathroom? You may want to rethink.

Hey I just wanted to say we have a bathroom similar to yours. grey and black tile on the walls and a green tub. we started with the tub. we painted it white and it looks amazing. now I'm on to the grey tile painting it while. I hope it turns out as nice as yours. but just wanted to tell you that if you don't like your pink tub you could paint it white!

What did you use to paint it white?

I am wondering how the paint is holding up. Have you had to redo? Has it chipped?

Will this work over black tiles? Same basic glazed/no texture tiles, just black!!! UGH!!

    1. the KILZ primer is great. It should work over black tiles with maybe 3 coats of semi gloss white, instead of 2. good luck. Send me pics! :)

  17. I first primed the pink tiles with KILS oil based primer, then painted them swiss coffee white with 2 coats.

Love your painted tiles! My problem is my shower tiles (installed improperly unbeknown to me until several years later). Mildew is in the grout and no amount of cleaning will remove it. We finally had the shower re-grouted and the black color of mildew came through before the professional tile man could finish. Do you think this tile could be painted and some sort of sealant used to protect from water damage. It would certainly be less expensive than re-tiling the entire shower (which is over sized). Love your blog!

  19. Is the paint still holding up well on the tiles? I want to try this if it is. Thank you!

    1. Yes Cory, the paint is still holding up in this bathroom. Remember, we did NOT paint inside the tub area. Good Luck with your project!

  20. So after you prime with the KILZ, you can use any kind of paint over that without issues with it getting wet when people shower?
Is the semi-gloss sheen the only important component for that? Thanks!!

For wet area tiles I used tile paint from refinishingonline.com as it is specifically for painting tile showers, wall tile and tiled floors. Paid under $50 bucks and my tile over the bathtub and in my shower looks great!
